A geologist and computer programmer, Olivier arrived in Australia in 1989 after some years in the oil and mining industry in France, Jordan, South Africa and Italy. He has been working as an English-French translator since receiving professional accreditation from the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) later that year.

At first concentrating on general and technical translation, he now regularly works for United Nations and other international organisations and was the principal French translator for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Bid Company.

In his twelve year career, he has translated Ministers' speeches, conference papers, technical and environmental regulations, patents, contracts, manuals, software interfaces and help files as well as training, marketing and advertising materials. He has also translated an essay by David Malouf (shortlisted for the Booker Prize) and subtitled Australian award-winning feature films.

Olivier worked as a part-time subtitler with SBS Corporation, Australia's multicultural broadcaster, from 1998 to 2002.

He was appointed as a NAATI French examiner in 1999.
